Letter from Fr Smith on Resuming Public Mass on 12 May 2020 (sent 3 May 2020)

As of 1 June, our Mass & Confession schedule are below. 

  • Daily Mass Monday-Friday at 7a (English) & 12n (Latin) & 8a on Saturdays (Latin)
  • Anticipated Mass 5p on Saturdays (English)
  • Sundays at 8a (English), 10a (English), 12n (Latin) and 6p (English)

Confessions

  • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5-6p
  • Saturdays 3.30-4.45p

Virtual Opportunities are presented below:

Monday, 1 June

  • 7a English & 12n Latin Mass (in Church)
    • On 12 May public Mass at POP resumed at 25% capacity for 4 weeks and told to block off every other pew.  We have space for a maximum of 300 people at this reduced capacity. Between 30-40 people, on average, attend daily Mass.
    • The dispensation from the obligation to attend Holy Mass remains in force until further notice.  We encourage all who are in a high-risk category to continue to stay at home.
    • We ask that, if you come to church for Mass, please be cognizant of the 6 feet social distancing rule, not touching your face, recommend wearing a mask and/or gloves for protection, and carrying hand sanitizer.
    • Please do not come to church if you are exhibiting any symptoms of illness. And, plan to leave immediately after Mass without socializing.
    • General Absolution is no longer available. Scheduled confession becomes available on 2 June (schedule).
    • Holy Communion is distributed at the side altars after Mass. The faithful are encouraged to continue to make a Spiritual Communion. Please wait in the middle of the transept behind the table for the offertory gifts maintaining 6’ distance  and then approach the rail in front of the minister.
    • There will not be an opportunity to greet your priest until further notice.

Mercy Sunday, A Guide for the Domestic Church 2020

When Pope John Paul canonized Sr. Faustina (making her St. Faustina), he also, on the same day, surprised the entire world by establishing Divine Mercy Sunday (the feast day associated with the message) as a feast day for the entire Church. The feast day falls on the Second Sunday of the Easter season. On that day, Pope John Paul II declared, “This is the happiest day of my life.”

On February 22, 1931, a nun named Sister Faustina sees a vision of the Lord Jesus, who asks her to paint an image according to the pattern she sees. The image was of Jesus with a red and blue ray coming out of his heart. One ray symbolized water, the other blood. Jesus told St. Faustina, “I want the image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it.” St. Faustina was told to sign the Image “Jesus, I trust in you!” Jesus told St. Faustina that the image’s purpose was three-fold: to be venerated; to serve as a reminder of God’s Love and Mercy; and to be used as a vessel to obtain graces. In 1934, a painting of Image was completed and in 1935, the image was publicly venerated. A few years later, victims of WW-II were among the first to be comforted by the Divine Mercy Image. Saint Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday in 2000. On April 22, 2002, Divine Mercy Sunday was celebrated officially for the first time by the Universal Church.

Along with the image, Jesus also gave Saint Faustina a prayer that is known today as The Divine Mercy Chaplet. The Chaplet is prayed using the rosary and consists of several prayers that appease God. Those who pray this chaplet receive these promises from Jesus: Conversion of sinners when the Chaplet is said on their behalf. Those who will recite the Chaplet will receive great mercy at the hour of death. Unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in His Mercy. Souls who spread the honor of His Mercy will be shielded their entire lives and at the hour of death, Jesus will not be the Judge, but rather the Merciful Savior.

Some ways to celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday at home:

  • Watch Maria Barontini (our Pastoral Associate for Children’s Catechesis) talk about mercy in a special kid-friendly video (YouTube)
  • At 3p, join the Facebook LIVE to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet together as a family (chaplet is said on the rosary; here is an online link for how to pray the chaplet) with Eucharistic Adoration (click here a few minutes prior to 3p EST, you do not need to be a member of Facebook to watch)
    • Learn about the Vatican’s statement on obtaining the plenary indulgence (here) associated with praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet
  • Use your free Formed membership provided to parish & school members to watch:
  • Let your children paint or draw a mini-poster to hang above their bed that says “Jesus, I Trust In You!” with the blue and red rays coming out from the heart of Jesus.
  • Make a Divine Mercy craft with your kids (only need printer, paper, and crayons!)

  1. drop off your offertory in our mailbox: at the doors to Parish House (formerly Croghan Hall) that face the school is a mailbox with an outer door and an inner safe drop door for envelopes (how to video)
  2. mail it to us: 1209 Brushy Creek Rd, Taylors South Carolina 29687
  3. bring your gift to Mass and drop it into the offertory basket
  4. donate online in our NEW tithe.ly system – setup EFT, one-time donation or recurring donation. Manage your giving with ease by downloading the tithe.ly app to your phone.
