Summer Opportunities for Adult Christian Formation
Dante’s Divine Comedy – Back by popular demand! We are going to begin reading Dante’s Divine Comedy, widely regarded as among the greatest pieces of world literature ever written. The Comedy is a description, rich in philosophical and theological content, of one man’s journey through the afterlife – Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. While many non-Catholics tend to associate Dante with his vision of Hell, he in fact spends most of his Comedy among the saved. Dante has been rightly called the “poet of the popes” as many pontiffs have encouraged Catholics to read his masterpiece. Pope Paul VI went as far as to call Dante “the poet of theologians and the theologian of poets” and Pope Benedict XV called the Divine Comedy “the fifth gospel.” Pope Francis has recommended Catholics take up this book during the Year of Mercy, calling Dante “a prophet of hope, herald of the possibility of redemption, liberation and the profound transformation of every man and woman, of all humanity.” Join us on Tuesday evenings (7p – 8:30) from 31 May to 30 August as we journey from the depths of sin to the very face of God!
