Knights of Columbus 9184 Foothills Council Raise $23,000 for Birthright of Greenville

Knights of Columbus 9184 Foothills Council presented Birthright of Greenville with a check for $23,000 to help fund their ongoing work supporting women experiencing unplanned pregnancies.

The charitable Catholic fraternal organization hosted their second “Luck of the Irish” Casino Night in Greer.

Attendees enjoyed an evening of casino-style games, a silent and a spirited live auction, food and fun.

”It has truly been a privilege to work with Birthright,” said event director Greg Pirochta. “It is such a worthy organization, reaching out and supporting women and babies in our community in such a personal and loving way. This event has really helped our council become more connected to their needs.”

Birthright of Greenville continues their 36-year mission offering loving alternatives to abortion for women in crisis.

“Birthright of Greenville is so very grateful for the support of the Knights of Columbus Foothills Council 9184 through the ‘Luck of the Irish’ fundraiser,” said Birthright of Greenville Director Meg Kocher. “The Knights hard work and dedication will assist Birthright in our mission to help many women facing unplanned pregnancies with loving alternatives to abortion.”

The Knights of Columbus support Birthright as part of their ongoing Culture of Life initiatives.

The council looks forward to offering an expanded evening of Irish themed Las Vegas style games, music and fun.

The 2017 event is scheduled for March 25 at the Cannon Centre in downtown Greer.

Dante’s Divine Comedy – Back by popular demand!  We are going to begin reading Dante’s Divine Comedy, widely regarded as among the greatest pieces of world literature ever written. The Comedy is a description, rich in philosophical and theological content, of one man’s journey through the afterlife – Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. While many non-Catholics tend to associate Dante with his vision of Hell, he in fact spends most of his Comedy among the saved. Dante has been rightly called the “poet of the popes” as many pontiffs have encouraged Catholics to read his masterpiece. Pope Paul VI went as far as to call Dante “the poet of theologians and the theologian of poets” and Pope Benedict XV called the Divine Comedy “the fifth gospel.” Pope Francis has recommended Catholics take up this book during the Year of Mercy, calling Dante “a prophet of hope, herald of the possibility of redemption, liberation and the profound transformation of every man and woman, of all humanity.” Join us on Tuesday evenings (7p – 8:30) from 31 May to 30 August as we journey from the depths of sin to the very face of God! MOMNIPOTENT: A Movement to Reclaim a Vocation

MOMNIPOTENT: A Movement to Reclaim a Vocation

Is being a mother what you thought it would be? The exhaustion, monotony, mounting unfinished projects, a loss of a sense of self… Too many moms, especially young and new moms, do in fact feel disillusioned. Maybe you feel you’ve been sold a bill of goods, that success and happiness are not possible through the vocation to motherhood. Many moms quietly resign themselves to the idea that success, happiness and fulfillment are things they will need to find in spite of motherhood, not because of it.

In Momnipotent, Danielle Bean understands all this first-hand and meets women where they are. With great wit, wisdom, and compassion, she provides much-needed encouragement to all women and beautifully resonates with their feminine hearts.

The MOMNIPOTENT study is coming to Prince of Peace! Beginning Monday, 6 June through 1 August (with no meeting on July 4) we will meet in the middle school building at 7:30p. Please contact Stephanie Lasitter at stephanie.lasitter@princeofpeacetaylors.org or 864.331.3905 to sign up. You will receive the MOMNIPOTENT book and journal combination with your sign up at no cost.

The St. Catherine Choir will sing on the Feast of the Ascension

The St. Catherine Choir will sing on the Feast of the Ascension

In honor of the Feast of the Ascension, the St. Catherine Choir will be singing a portion of the Mass in C by Sigismund von Neukomm at the 12n Mass on Thursday, 5 May and at the 10a and 12n Masses on Sunday, 8 May. There are 28 students in the choir, and they will be singing the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei.

An Austrian born composer, organist and conductor, Sigismund von Neukomm (1778-1858) studied keyboard under brother composers Johann Michael and Franz Joseph Haydn. At age fourteen, Neukomm became the honorary organist at the University of Salzburg church, and a few years later also became the chorus master of the Salzburg court theatre. He moved to Vienna in 1797 and taught piano and voice lessons for several years, including teaching two of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s children. In 1804 Neukomm left Vienna and traveled extensively for the rest of his musical career, living in cities throughout all of Europe, Russia, as well as several countries in Africa and South America. He continued to compose numerous works, and befriended many notable composers, including Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann.

Neukomm was a prolific composer, writing over 200 songs, ten operas, 8 oratorios, and 48 masses. He penned his Mass in C while traveling and performing the music of Haydn and Mozart in Brazil, and is thought to have composed it for the Archduchess of Austria, Leopoldine, the daughter of Emperor Franz I. Written for 2 voices, it is one of his many shorter masses composed in the style of the classical period, with momentary leanings towards the romantic era.
